When will my order ship?

Anything without a ship date on the Shop page is ready to ship. A soap that's still curing is open for preorder, and its ship date is shown on its card. If your bag includes a preorder item, everything ships together in one shipment once it's ready, on the date shown in your Shopping Bag. Your card is charged at checkout, same as any order.

Why are you so passionate about handmade soap?

Personal care products sold in the U.S. can legally contain more than 12,000 different chemical ingredients, and current regulations restrict far fewer of them than regions like the EU. That gap is a big part of why we started Unearthed Artisan Co. — we believe in minimizing unnecessary chemical exposure wherever we reasonably can, so every product is built from ingredients we can actually name: real plant oils, grass-fed tallow, natural clay and root powder, and pure essential oils. It's a simple standard, and it's the whole reason we make everything by hand, in small batches, instead of buying it off a factory line.

What makes this different from store-bought soap?

Most bars on a store shelf are actually detergent — made with synthetic cleansers and stripped of glycerin (which gets sold off separately). Ours is true soap, handmade in small batches through cold-process saponification, which keeps the natural glycerin in every bar for extra moisture. We also color and scent with real plant material — clays, root powders, activated charcoal, and pure essential oils — never synthetic dye or synthetic fragrance.

What ingredients do you use?

Organic plant oils, essential oils, grass-fed tallow, organic shea butter, and natural clay, root, and mineral pigments — never synthetic dye or synthetic fragrance. Every ingredient is sourced and documented. Scented by nature, colored by the earth — that's not just our tagline, it's exactly how we formulate.

Why do you use grass-fed tallow in your products?

Tallow is one of the oldest skincare ingredients there is — long before synthetic lotions, soap was made from tallow, and for good reason. Its fatty acids closely resemble the oils your own skin produces, so it softens and moisturizes without feeling greasy. In soap, it makes a hard, long-lasting bar with a creamy, gentle lather — so we never need palm oil. Using tallow also honors the whole animal, making good use of fat that would otherwise go to waste.

We use 100% pure tallow from pasture-raised, grass-fed cattle, sourced from a small, family-owned supplier. It's rendered in small batches, filtered without chemicals, and has no additives — just clean tallow, naturally rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Pasture-raised cattle graze outdoors on open pasture, the way nature intended. It's the same belief this company started with: real, time-tested ingredients over manufactured ones.

What are the benefits of the different ingredients?

Every ingredient earns its place. Grass-fed tallow is naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, and closely mirrors the lipids your skin already makes, so it moisturizes deeply without feeling heavy. Organic plant oils like jojoba and rosehip seed oil add lightweight, antioxidant-rich hydration, while organic shea butter brings extra richness for drier skin. Clay and Dead Sea mud gently draw out impurities, making them well suited to oily or blemish-prone skin, and activated charcoal — a fine, non-abrasive powder that adsorbs impurities without scrubbing — offers a gentle daily facial cleanse, balanced by our moisturizing tallow base so it never feels stripping. For color, we turn to root powders and clay instead of synthetic dye — and our essential oils, like calming lavender or bright citrus, do double duty as our only fragrance. Beeswax finishes the job in our lip balms, forming a protective barrier that seals in moisture. And because we choose organic wherever nature allows it, you can trust these ingredients were grown without synthetic pesticides too — real, from the ground up.

Do you use synthetic fragrance or dye?

Never. Our soap and cream get their scent from essential oils, while our lip balms use organic, food-safe flavor oils instead — vanilla, peppermint, and guava. Color comes from natural clay, root powders, and activated charcoal, never synthetic dye.

Why does the color or swirl pattern look a little different from bar to bar?

Because we color with real clay and root powder instead of synthetic dye, and cut every bar by hand, small variations in shade and swirl are part of the process — not a flaw. No two bars are ever perfectly identical, which is part of what makes a handmade bar different from a factory one.

Are your products vegan?

No. Our soap, cream, and lip balm are made with grass-fed tallow and beeswax — both animal-derived ingredients we use deliberately: tallow is rich in vitamins and closely mirrors the lipids your own skin already produces, and beeswax forms a natural, breathable barrier that helps lip balm lock in moisture. If you're interested in a plant-based option, please fill out our quick contact form and we would be happy to discuss what's available.

Are your products regulated?

Yes — our soap, cream, and lip balm are formulated and labeled to meet FDA cosmetic labeling requirements. We don't make drug or medical claims; these are cosmetic products meant for everyday care.

Will these work for sensitive skin?

Several of our formulas — like Quiet Clay soap — are fragrance-free and made with sensitive skin in mind. As with any new skincare product, we recommend a small patch test first.

How long does soap take to cure?

Every bar is mixed and poured, then cured for six weeks before it's ready to ship. That resting period lets the saponification process fully complete and excess water evaporate, resulting in a harder, longer-lasting bar that's gentle and ready for everyday use.

How long does a bar of soap last?

How long a bar lasts really depends on how it's used — a single person showering daily might get 3–5 weeks from one bar, while a bar shared by a household, or used more than once a day, will go faster. Keeping it on a draining soap dish between uses (rather than letting it sit in water) helps any bar last longer.

How should I store my soap?

Keep it somewhere dry and well-ventilated between uses. A draining soap dish that lifts the bar off standing water keeps it firm and helps it last as long as possible.

Can I mix and match scents?

Absolutely — mix and match soap scents freely, or visit Rituals on the shop page, where Curated Ritual lets you build your own set from any soap, cream, lip balm, or accessory, priced together as one considered whole.

How do I actually place an order?

Browse the Shop page and click "Add to Bag" on anything you'd like — soap, cream, lip balm, or one of the Rituals (a soap that's still curing says "Preorder" instead). Once your shopping bag has what you want, click the bag icon in the top-right corner of any page and hit "Checkout" — you'll be taken to a secure Stripe payment page to enter your card details. Once payment goes through, we'll follow up to confirm delivery details.
